The FSG Academy provides boarding facilities, sport programs and educational programs. We provide the IB Diploma Programme in collaboration with Rivers International School Arnhem.
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a challenging and demanding two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students aged 16 to 19. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.
What does the curriculum contain?
The curriculum contains six subject groups together with a core made up of three separate parts. Students study six subjects selected from the subject groups. Normally three subjects are studied at higher level and the remaining three subjects are studied at standard level. All three parts of the core – Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity and Service – are central to the philosophy of the Diploma.
Extended Essay (EE):
The Extended Essay offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of Individual interest, and acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university. It has a prescribed limit of 4,000 words.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK):
The interdisciplinary TOK course is designed to provide coherence by exploring the nature of knowledge across disciplines, encouraging an appreciation of other cultural perspectives. It is assessed through an essay and a presentation.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS):
Participation in the school’s CAS programme encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service work, thus fostering students’ awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena.
Ownership of learning
At Rivers we believe that pupils should take active ownership of their learning. One expression of this are our so-called Trilateral Talks. Instead of Parent-Teacher Meetings, twice a year pupils prepare and give a presentation to their parents and tutors in which they reflect on and evaluate their learning and define targets for further development throughout the academic year.
During their time at school, the Careers Counsellor will stay in close contact with pupils, to help them decide about their future. This involves a long process of orientation, collection of information, visiting of open days and finally making a decision. All pupils have access to a computer-based job and professions test in school that will help them develop ideas about their future options. The Careers Counsellor will encourage pupils to work with this programme and will discuss results with them. Pupils will receive assistance with their applications to institutes of higher education in the Netherlands and abroad.
The Diploma programme suits perfectly in the philosophy of the FSG Academy as it offers a complete academic package with the goal to educate the whole person: physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, intellectually and ethically.
